College Football Bottom 25 Poll, Week 12, 2022
This was a week to be surprised by two poll teams. First off, Vanderbilt pulled off a road upset of a nationally ranked team, Kentucky, to vault themselves out of the poll after only one week.
Second is the season long story of New Mexico State. Three straight wins has put the usually moribund Aggies at 4-5, out of the DHM and chasing a potential bowl berth. Not that their recent schedule has been difficult, but 4 wins in 9 games is an historically great stretch for NMSU. Add to that the excellent seasons that usual 25ers Kansas and Connecticut are having and it becomes clear that coaching does matter. With Jerry Kill taking over the Aggies, Jim Mora Jr. in charge at UConn and Lance Leipold at Kansas that good coaching is paying dividends right from the start as all 3 have been head coaching successes in the past.
Continued success to them, and as always, enjoy the games. And watch these Bummer Bowls......almost all of them can be seen somewhere and they are often tight, competitive and vastly entertaining.
1) Massachusetts (1-9) Oh, so close for the Minute-men, who lost 35-33 at B25 #13 Arkansas State in a Bummer Bowl. Painfully, that will be followed by a visit to play a Bummer Bowl against a bad Texas A&M team who will still likely destroy them.
2) Colorado (1-9) The Beefalos were stampeded at #9 USC, 55-10. Next up is a visit to take on new Top 25ers Washington.
3) University of South (really West) Florida (1-9) The Nulls lost 41-23 to SMU at home. Next is a Bummer Bowl at B25 #14 Tulsa.
4) Northwestern (1-9) Despite the 9 straight losses, Greg is going to be mad that I don’t think the Mildcats are history’s greatest one-win team ever. But guess what…..they got Gophered 31-3 at Minnesota. This team SUCKS out loud. Next up, a trip to Purdue. To get beat again.
5) Akron (1-9) The Zips remained at 1-9 after losing last Tuesday. They return to Saturday football at Buffalo on 11/19 after what you could call a half BYE week. Not playing = not losing. Hello #5 in the polls!
6) Charlotte (2-9) The 24 & 1/2ers lost 24-14 at Middle Tennessee State University. They will be the first team in the poll to finish their season hosting a Bummer Bowl against B25 #20 Louisiana Tech to close out a miserable 2022 campaign.
7) Hawai’i (2-9) The Rainbow Worriers lost 41-34 on the island to Utah State. UNLV takes the flight over next to play.
8) Nevada (2-8) The Wolf-cack horsed around with the Boise State Broncos and got bucked, 41-3. Next up, Fresno State comes in for a win.
9) Colorado State (2-8) The Hams eeked out a 14-13 loss against cross border rivals Wyoming. Next up is the 2 hour I-25 commute game at Air Force.
10) New Mexico (2-8) The Loblos got shot down 35-3 at Air Force. Next, San Diego State comes calling on Friday night.
11) Virginia Tech (2-8) The Jokies lost 24-7 at Duke. No, it wasn’t by 1 point, but it was their 7th straight loss. Next up, a visit to play at an angry Liberty, who took only their second loss of the year last week. Jokies luck…..they lost but remained in the same spot.
12) Old Dominion (3-7) I made the mistake of calling last week’s Butterfly opponent, James Madison, Virginia’s best college football team. My apologies to Liberty. It didn’t matter much to ODU, who lost 37-3, either way. Next is a fluttery trip to take on Appalachian State.
13) Indiana (3-7) National #2 Ohio State covered the 40 point spread in pasting the Loosiers 56-14 last weekend in Columbus. Now comes a trip to East Lansing to take on a far more reasonable task for Indiana, playing at the Michigan State Spartans.
14) Tulsa (3-7) The Golden Tropical Depression lost their Thursday matchup at Memphis, 26-10. Next is a Bummer Bowl, hosting B25 #3, the University of South (really West) Florida.
15) Stanford (3-7) The Marginal were lampooned 42-7 at Rice-Eccles Stadium against Utah. Now comes the BIG Bummer Bowl BIG Game at California. The band is on the field, fellas.
16) Arizona State (3-7) The Stunned Devils of Roger Clyne Alma Mater University got scratched by the Cougars at Washington State, 28-18. Next up, Oregon State brings their 7-3 record to Tempe.
17) Texas State (3-7) The Sobcats lost 38-21 at South Alabama. Next up is a home Bummer Bowl against Arkansas State.
18) Texas A&M (3-7) The (what’s an?) Aggies took a sixth straight loss, 13-10 in an SEC Bummer Bowl at Auburn. Next up is a second consecutive Bummer Bowl, hosting new B25 #1 Massachusetts.
19) Navy (3-7) The Mid-dipmen fell way behind Our Lady and then almost beat them, finally succumbing 35-32 in Baltimore. Ever notice that any game in any east coast city is basically a home game for Our Lady? Anyways, the Middies take a trip to Disney this weekend to take on UCF before their annual 3 week sabbatical leading up to the season finale against Army.
20) Louisiana Tech (3-7) The Dulldogs rejoin after 51-7 drubbing at UTSA. Next up is a chance to drop right back out by winning a Bummer Bowl at B25 #6 Charlotte.
21) Nebraska (3-7) The Bornsuckers took an expected beatdown at Michigan, 34-3. Wisconsin pays a visit to Lincoln this weekend.
22) California (3-7) The Golden Pears did their part to create next week’s BIG BUMMER BOWL BIG GAME against B25 #15 Stanford by losing their 6th straight last week, 38-10 at Oregon State.
23) Temple (3-7) The Fowls are back after losing 43-36 at Houston. Next, Cincinnati pays a visit to the city o’ Brotherly Love.
24) Western Michigan (3-7) The Cloncos are in that weird Tues/Wed MAC game netherworld. This Wednesday they are at Central Michigan.
25) Northern Illinois (3-7) More mid-week MAC madness. The next game is Wednesday, when former 25ers Miami of Ohio visit.
Dishonorable Mention (AKA DHM)
Boston College (3-7), Arkansas State (3-7), Army (3-6)
OUT:
Auburn (4-6), Vanderbilt (4-6), Louisiana - Monroe (4-6), West Virginia (4-6), Arizona (4-6), New Mexico State (4-5)
Virginia (3-7) The Cavaliers lost 37-7 at home against Pittsburgh. It doesn’t matter at all compared to the other loss they took Sunday night when three of their players were (allegedly) killed by an ex-player. Virginia will remain out of the poll altogether for the remainder of the season, regardless of record. It is, quite literally, the least I can do. But I CAN do that.
