College Football Bottom 25 2022, the Penultimate Poll and Coaching Carousel

Hello all. This should really be that last poll, except for two things. Akron has a postponed game to play this weekend and Army plays Navy next week. The outcomes could change Akron's positioning and could, potentially, put Navy back in the poll. So, I am going to add my usual look at the B25 coaching carousel on the end of this week's poll instead of waiting until later. Then I will have another, final poll next week, plus the world- famous Capital None B25 Fictional Bowl Week.

This week, you could watch Akron vs. Buffalo, if you want. But there are those awesome conference championship games, too.

As always, enjoy yer football!!!

1) Massachusetts (1-11) The Minute-men were a pesky 20-3 win over Stony Brook back in September from absolute imperfection. Massachusetts hosted Army last week, losing 44-7 to close out the season.

2) Northwestern (1-11) The Mildcats closed out 2022 with an 11th straight loss, getting blown out 41-3 in the Land Of Lincoln Trophy game at Illinois. Take that, Moo Town.

3) University of South (really West) Florida (1-11) Ten losses in a row finish out the Nulls 2022 season with their 46-39 War on I-4 Rivalry game loss to UCF. They showed some moxie, however, as they nearly erased a 28 point second quarter deficit.

4) Colorado (1-11) The Beefalos were once again stampeded, 63-21 by PAC 10/12/Whatever championship contenders Utah. Their 2022 season is over. Colorado gave up 534 points this season, 40 more than the next closest team, USF. Only 9 FBS schools even gave up over 400. That is 44.5 points per game! Help us, Coach Prime!

5 tie) Nevada (2-10) Now ten straight losses for the Wolf-cack after a tight 27-22 loss at B25 #23 UNLV in The Battle for The Fremont Cannon/Rivalry Bummer Bowl game.

5 tie) New Mexico (2-10) “Well, apparently they couldn’t beat SOMEBODY, maybe” challenge Bummer Bowl was a loser for Los Loblos, 17-0 at Colorado State.

6) Akron (2-9) The Zips stepped up and walloped Northern Illinois on the road, 44-12. The previously postponed game at Buffalo has been rescheduled for Friday, 12/2.

7) Hawai’i (3-10) The Rainbow Worriers were waylaid 27-14 at San Jose State in the unlucky game #13 bowl to finish 2022.

8) Charlotte (3-9) Season over.

9) Northern Illinois (3-9) The Muskies….ouch, babes! Lost badly in a home Bummer Bowl against previously 1 win Akron, 44-12.

10) Louisiana Tech (3-9) The Dulldogs were blazed at home by UAB, 37-27, to put a cap on a lousy 2022 campaign.

11) Arkansas State (3-9) The DedWolves flopped 48-19 at home to the Troy Trojans. 2022 is checked off the list. A simple 3-point loss in September is all that separates #11 from #12 in this poll.

12) Old Dominion (3-9) The Butterflies built up a halftime lead at South Alabama, but couldn’t hold on, bowing out of 2022 with a 27-20 loss.

13) Arizona State (3-9) The Stunned Devils of Roger Clyne Alma Mater University finish 2022 with a “Duel In The Desert” rivalry game loss to Arizona, 38-35.

14) Stanford (3-9) The Cardinal close out the season with a 35-26 home loss to BYU. Following the game, ever classy Stanford coach David Shaw announced his resignation. As we saw above, the difference between Stanford and ASU, in the end, was a 15-14 Cardinal victory back in October.

15) Temple (3-9) The Fowls were not exactly keel hauled by the Pirates of East Carolina, but they did lose, 49-46, to bring their 2022 season to an end.

16) Boston College (3-9) The Fleagles finish 2022 with their ninth loss, 32-23 to Syracuse.

17) Colorado State (3-9) There was a time earlier this season when I thought that the Rams were the worst team in the FBS. But they picked up win #3 on the season with a 17-0 Bummer Bowl shutout against B25 #8 New Mexico.

18) Virginia Tech (3-8) Turns out the Commonwealth Cup game was also cancelled due to the Virginia football shooting. Probably for the best.

19) Louisiana-Monroe (4-8) The Marhawks close out 2022 with a 20-10 home loss to the almost schizophrenic Southern Mississippi Eagles.

20) Rutgers (4-8) The Scarlet Blight finished 2022 with a thud after a fifth straight loss, 37-0 at Maryland. Three others of those 5 losses were similar blowouts and, all told, this team started 3-0 and finished 1-8.

21) FIU (4-8) The Panters fell off the edge of the world, also, losing 4 straight after being 4-4, including a final 33-28 home loss to MTSU.

22) Central Michigan (4-8) The Chippers lost 38-19 at Eastern Michigan to rejoin the poll at the last second.

23) Indiana (4-8) The Loosiers, like Big 10/12/97/Whatever mates Rutgers, also started 3-0, then went 1-8. That last loss was The Old Oaken Bucket Rivalry game to Purdue, 30-16.

24 tie) Texas State (4-8) The Sobcats were 3-3 at one point, then lost 5 of their last 6. The team fired Head Coach Jake Spavital after that final home loss, 41-13 to Louisiana.

24 tie) Georgia State (4-8) Crushed bowl bound Southern Mississippi 4 weeks ago, but then lost 3 straight to close season, the last one at Marshall, 28-23. Wecome back, my alma mater.

25) Iowa State (4-8) Welcome to the poll, Stiff Breezes. This highly rated squad jumped to a 3-0 start and then, like Rutgers and Indiana, finished 1-8 after a 62-14 loss at TCU.

Dishonorable Mention:  Navy (4-7), California (4-8), Nebraska (4-8)

OUT: Army (5-6), West Virginia (5-7), Kent State (5-7), Western Michigan (5-7) fired coach, Arizona (5-7), Texas A&M (5-7), Tulsa (5-7) Fired coach, UNLV (5-7) fired coach.

The B25 Coaching Carousel 2022

Nebraska (DHM) - Fired Scott Frost in September after a loss to Georgia Southern. Former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule was hired at season's end.

Arizona State (#13) - Old school coach Herm Edwards was also fired in September, a week after Frost. The Stunned Devils hired former Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham.

Colorado (#4) Head coach Karl Dorrell was let go on October 2nd after an 0-5 start. It is looking very much like Coach Prime Deion Sanders will be hired.

Charlotte (#9) Will Healy was fired on October 23rd and former Michigan associate coach Bill Poggi was hired as his replacement on November 15th.

University of South (really West) Florida (#3) Jeff Scott was fired after an aggregate 4-26 record across 2+ seasons. His replacement has yet to be hired.

Stanford (#14) As noted above, David Shaw resigned after the last game this year. No replacement has been named yet.

Texas State (#24) Jake Spavital was let go at season's end. He will be replaced by FCS' Incarnate Word wunderkind G.J. Kinne.

In addition, Tulsa, Western Michigan, Georgia Tech, Auburn and UNLV were all in this poll at various times this season and ended up firing their coaches.
