College Football's Bottom 25 2024, Week 8
We are at a bit of a crux at this point of the season as most of the teams have played half their schedule and we are stuck with fourteen 1-5 teams and, when including the Dishonorable Mention teams, eighteen 2-4 teams.
With the 2-4 teams, a win this week and they are, with a little scheduling luck, potentially bowl-eligible teams. Lose and drop to 2-5 and you are likely looking to stay in this poll and finish with 3 or 4 wins, maximum. Eighteen teams either in the poll or at 2-4 and in the DHM are involved in Bummer Bowls or Almost Bummer Bowls this week, which could mean a lot of changes come next week.
Should be fun and, as always, enjoy the games!
1) UTEP (0-6) The Miners lost a Thursday night conference battle at Western Kentucky, 44-17. Next is a AAC vs. CUSA Twin Conferences Bummer Bowl hosting B25 #21 FIU.
2) Kent
State (0-6). The Golden Flashless lost a MAC Bummer Bowl against Ball
State, 37-35. Soooo close! Next is a MAC (almost) Bummer Bowl at DHMers Bowling Green.
3) Kennesaw State (0-5) The Fowls (#1) had
a weekend BYE before this Tuesday’s CUSA Bummer Bowl at B25 #12 MTSU.
4) Massachusetts (1-6) The Minute-Men got
walloped 45-3 at nationally ranked Missouri.
Next is a BYE (finally) before hosting an FCS opponent, Wagner.
5) Akron (1-6) The Zips waited out a 5-hour
weather delay to take their latest loss, 34-24 at Western Michigan. Next, is a BYE weekend before Eastern Michigan visits on 10/26
6) UAB (1-5) The Lazy-ers were pummeled at West
Point, losing 44-10 to Army, making
the Black Knights one of the first bowl eligible teams this season. Next is a
visit to Tampa to take on new 25ers, USF.
Hopefully UAB will notice that Tampa
is in West, not South Florida and show up at the correct stadium!
7) Air Force (1-5) The Failcons lost a Mountain
West Bummer Bowl at New Mexico,
52-37. Next, Colorado State comes to
Colorado Springs.
8) Southern Mississippi (1-5) The Golden
Favres lost 38-21 at home to surprising Sun Belt Conference leaders UL Monroe. Next, Arkansas State visits Hattiesburg.
9) Utah State (1-5) The Lutes lost at home to
UNLV, 50–34. Next, an almost Bummer
Bowl at DHMers New Mexico, who just
won their way out of the poll last weekend.
10) Purdue (1-5)
The Shotandabeers went for two in OT and almost knocked off nationally ranked Illinois on the road, succumbing 50-49.
They were rewarded for their courage by having national #3 Oregon, who just beat Ohio
State, pay a visit to West Lafayette.
11) UCLA (1-5)
The Ruins lost 21-17 at home to Minnesota.
Next, they head to New Jersey to take on Rutgers. Oh, the places you’ll go in the Big 10 (18)! This is the
first ever meeting between the schools.
12) Middle Tennessee State (1-5) The
Blue Faiders lost 48-21 at Louisiana
Tech on Thursday. Next is a Tuesday night Conference USA Bummer Bowl
against B25 #3 Kennesaw State.
13) New Mexico State (1-5) The (What’s
an?) Aggies lost at former 25ers, Jacksonville (the non-Florida one) State, 54-13. Now they
get to host a Tuesday night CUSA tilt against former 25ers Louisiana Tech.
14) Wyoming (1-5) The Cowboils lost 27-24 at home to San Diego State. Next up, Wyoming visits the other MWC "San" city team, San Jose State.
15) Mississippi State (1-5) The Dulldogs
lost 41-31 at Georgia. The reward is a road game at national #15 Texas A&M.
16) Temple (1-5) The Fowls #2 had a BYE week.
Next, DHMers Tulsa visit
Philadelphia
17) Troy (1-5) The Trojadies had a BYE
weekend. This Wednesday brings a visit to DHMers South Alabama for an (almost) Sun Belt Bummer Bowl.
18) Florida State (1-5) The Semi-gnomes had a
much-needed BYE week. Next, a Friday night showdown at Duke.
19) Kansas (1-5) The Nayhawks also had a BYE
week and took the commensurate poll drop, as well. DHMers Houston
visit next for a Big 12 (16) (almost) Bummer Bowl.
20) Hawai’i (2-4)
The Rainbow Worriers drop in after a 28-7 home loss to nationally ranked Boise State. Hawai’I’s only two wins are against FCS opponents. Next at Washington State of the Pac 12(2)
21) FIU (2-4) The
Panters had a BYE after they had beat Louisiana
Tech to go to 2-3, but last week they lost 31-24 at Liberty to join the party. This definitely bipolar team (beat Central Michigan by 36, lost to Monmouth and FAU) get a Bummer Bowl at new #1 UTEP on Wednesday night. Who knows how things will turn out?
22) UTSA (2-4)
The Roadstumblers are solidly in one step forward, two steps back mode, joining
after a 29-27 road loss at former 25ers Rice.
That pattern means it is time for a win this coming weekend hosting another
former, FAU. Couldn’t ask for a much
better opponent if that is your goal.
23) USF (2-4)
After a 2-1 start, the Lulls have lost 3 straight, the last being a 21-3 home beating
by Memphis,
to join the fray on the ocean floor that is the B25. Next up is a visit from
the B25 #6 train wreck that is the UAB
Lazy-ers.
24) Appalachian
State (2-4) The B25 is not normal territory for the Doubtaineers. They also
started 2-1, but three straight losses (including a 34-point home drubbing by
DHMers South Alabama) and one hurricane
cancelled game later, here they are at #24. Last week brought a 34-24 defeat at
Louisiana. Next up is a BYE before Georgia State, who might be a 25er by
then, visits Boone.
25) Wake Forest
(2-4) To be fair, two of the Lemon Beacons losses are by a total of 4 points,
but losses they still be! Last week, Clemson
visited and dominated, 49-14. Next is a visit to Storrs to take on the only
decent (winners of three straight!) UConn
team we’ve seen outside of the basketball arena in the last 10 years.
DISHONORABLE
MENTION: Houston (2-4), Baylor (2-4), Auburn (2-4), South Alabama (2-4), Tulsa (2-4), New Mexico (2-4), Rice (2-4), Miami of Ohio (2-4), Old Dominion (2-4), Ball State (2-4),
FAU (2-4) and Bowling Green (2-4)
Dropped Out: Louisiana Tech (2-3)
