College Football's Bottom 25 Poll, Week 9, 2024
Okay, yes, you will probably notice a few of what look like inconsistencies in the rankings, as New Mexico State beat Louisiana Tech, but the (what's an) Aggies are in the poll and the Bulldogs aren't. Or how UTEP beat FIU but ranks below (or higher) than the Panters. It is all in the record.
One of the decisions I made from jump when I started this poll, lo those many years ago, was that overall record was tantamount. New Mexico State is 2-5, while Louisiana Tech is 2-4. Same with UTEP, who is 1-6 and who beat FIU, who is 2-5. So, you have an explanation for the thing that might have seemed off.
We are down to two un-undefeated teams, oddly Kent and Kennesaw States, respectively. Kennesaw has the much weaker remaining schedule, with two current 25ers and Louisiana Tech of the DHM of their 6 remaining opponents. Kent really only has one winnable chance upcoming, hosting Akron in week 11.
As always, enjoy the games, folks!!
1) Kent State (0-7). The Golden Flashless lost their MAC (almost) Bummer Bowl at former DHMers Bowling Green, 27-6. This makes them the first FCS team to the unlucky 7th loss this season. Next up is a trip to Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo to take on the Western Michigan Broncos.
2) Kennesaw State (0-6) The Fowls (#1) lost
Tuesday’s CUSA Bummer Bowl at B25 #12 MTSU,
14-5. Next, Liberty visits on
Wednesday.
3) UAB (1-6) The Lazy-ers lost their 6th
straight game, a Bummer Bowl at South
(really West) Florida, 35-25. Next is a BYE weekend before hosting Tulsa.
4) Air Force (1-6) The Failcons are the only
struggling academy team, after a 21-13 home defeat at the hands of Colorado State, who got their first
away victory in the series since 2002. Next up is a BYE weekend before
travelling to take on Army.
5) Southern Mississippi (1-6) The Golden
Favres lost 44-28 at home to Arkansas
State, leading to the firing of head coach Will Hall. Next, James Madison vists.
6) Utah State (1-6) The Lutes lost also lost
their 6th straight, also in an (almost) Bummer Bowl at former DHMers
New Mexico, 50-45. Next up, another
MWC Bummer Bowl at Wyoming.
7) Purdue
(1-6) The Shotandabeers gave everything they had two weeks ago against Illinois and had nothing left as they lost
35-0 at home to national #3 Oregon.
Next weekend is a BYE before Northwestern
visits.
8) Wyoming (1-6) The Cowboils took a
24-14 defeat at San Jose State. Next, they host B25 #6 Utah State for an MWC Bummer Bowl.
9) Mississippi State (1-6) The Dulldogs
lost their 6th straight game, this one at home to national #15 Texas A&M, 34-24. Next, Arkansas visits Starkville. Good thing
for the state that Ole Miss exists,
because between the Dulldogs and the Golden Favres, college football in
Mississippi is suffering.
10) Troy (1-6) The Trojadies lost 25-9 at
home to DHMers South Alabama in an (almost)
Sun Belt Bummer Bowl. Next is a visit to Arkansas
State to take on the Red Wolves.
11) Florida State (1-6) The Semi-gnomes had
such an ugly game at Duke, losing
23-16, in a game in which they had three consecutive offensive plays end in a
turnover, the first being a pick 6, leading directly to 17 points for the Blue
Devils. The ‘Gnomes kept it close with tough defense and a kick return TD to
start the second half, but they are only 2/3rds of a team right now and can’t
overcome their moribund and, frankly, offensive offense. Next is a visit to Miami, a game which ESPN probably now
regrets having in their primetime Saturday night slot.
12) Massachusetts (1-6) The Minute-Men had
a BYE (finally) and will be hosting Wagner
of the FCS next.
13) Akron (1-6) The Zips had a BYE weekend,
too, before Eastern Michigan visits
on 10/26.
14) UTEP (1-6) The Miners, formerly #1,
won an AAC vs. CUSA Twin Conferences Bummer Bowl, beating FIU 30-21 at home. Next, is a Tuesday night (almost) Bummer Bowl at
DHMers Louisiana Tech.
15) FIU (2-5)
The Bipolar Panters lost a Bummer Bowl at former B25 #1 UTEP, 30-21 on Wednesday night. Next, Sam Houston visits on Tuesday.
16) Hawai’i (2-5)
The Rainbow Worriers fell at Washington
State, 42-10. Next up, Nevada
takes a Hawai’ian vacation to play in the Tiny Bowl.
17) Rice (2-5)
The (now and again) Fowls #2 rejoin after a 24-10 loss at Tulane. Next, a trip to Storrs (aka South Hartford) to take on UConn.
18) Tulsa (2-5)
The Golden Bore-icane lost in Philadelphia to B25ers Temple, 20-10. Next, UTSA
comes to town.
19) Houston (2-5) The Sports Thinker asked
for suggestions for a mocking nickname for the Cougars and got this one from my
sister… The “middle aged women looking for companionship from young hot men”
rejoin the poll off of a 42-14 loss at B25ers Kansas. Utah comes to
town this week.
20) FAU (2-5) The
Fowls #3 (of 4) lost at UTSA 38-24.
Next is a BYE before a Friday night showdown at home against South (really West) Florida.
21) Ball State (2-5) The Marginals rejoin the poll after a 24-14 loss at Vanderbilt. Northern Illinois comes to
town next.
22) UCLA (2-5)
The Bruins beat Rutgers on the road,
35-32, in the first-ever meeting by these two old programs. I say, MORE Please!!! Next up is a road trip to Lincoln to take on
Nebraska, who are coming off their worst week of the season.
23) Middle Tennessee State (2-5) The
Blue Raiders won a home Tuesday night Conference USA Bummer Bowl against B25 #3
Kennesaw State, 14-5, breaking a 5-game
losing streak. Next is Wednesday showdown at Jacksonville (non-Florida version) State.
24) New Mexico State (2-5) The (What’s
an?) Aggies won a home Tuesday night CUSA tilt against former 25ers Louisiana Tech, 33-30 in 2 overtimes.
Next is a BYE weekend before a Wednesday Bummer Bowl at FIU.
25 tie) Temple (2-5) The Owls (aka Fowls #4) beat
Tulsa at home, 20-10. Next up is a potentially winnable
game at East Carolina.
25 tie) Kansas (2-5) The Jayhawks won their
Big 12 (16) (almost) Bummer Bowl against DHMers Houston, 42-14. Next is the big Sunflower Showdown rivalry game at Kansas State.
DISHONORABLE
