College Football's Bottom 25 2025, Week 7
We have hit the head coach firings section of the calendar, and while most of the focus is on Penn State's firing of James Franklin, two schools in the B25, Oregon State and UAB, made a coaching change after last weekend's games. And, as might be expected, 7 of the eight schools that have fired their head coaches this season are either currently in the B25 or DHM or have been. UCLA seemed to have gained the most benefit, as they have gone 2-1 under Tim Skipper, nearly winning the 3rd game, as well, a 17-14 loss at Northwestern 3 weeks ago.
As always, unless you are a recently fired head coach, enjoy the games!
1) Oregon State (0-7) The Greavers were clobbered at home, 39-14 by Wake Forest, leading them to fire Head Coach Trent Bray and replacing him with an interim coach, Robb Akey. Next up is OSU’s best shot at a win as an FCS opponent, the Lafayette Leopards, comes to town.
2) Massachusetts (0-6) The only reason that the Minute - Men are not #1 is because Oregon State hasn’t had a BYE week yet. Kent State came to Amherst and smashed UMass, 42 – 6. Next is a conference home game against Buffalo.
3) Sam Houston (0-6) The Fearkats lost a home date with Jacksonville State on Thursday, 29-27. Next is a home Bummer Bowl against fellow CUSA mates UTEP.
4) Charlotte (1-5) The 24.5ers were smashed 24-7 at Army. Next, Temple visits North Carolina’s biggest city (aka the smaller Atlanta) to take on the green and gold.
5) Nevada (1-5) The Wolfcack lost 44-10 at home to San Diego State, ahead of this upcoming weekend’s trip to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico.
6) Georgia State (1-5) The Panters took a 3 TD home beating from Appalachian State, 41-20. Next is the “Modern Day Hate” rivalry game, a Bummer Bowl this year, at Georgia Southern. I’d prefer if they called it the “Who is the REAL GSU?” game.
7) Oklahoma State (1-5) The Cowtoys were ridden hard by Houston in a 39-17 home loss. The Cincinnati Bearcats visit Stillwater this weekend.
8) Air Force (1-5) The Zoomies scored A LOT again, but still took loss number five, 51-48 at UNLV. Next up, Wyoming comes to town and the Cowboys will win 40-38, if the averages play out and form follows function.
9) Boston College (1-5) The Fleagles took a 41-10 thrashing from previously struggling Clemson. Next is a border battle at home against Connecticut, who has steadily been on the rise since mid-2024 after years of moribundity, if that is a word.
10) Middle Tennessee State (1-5) The Blue Faiders missed a 50 yard FG attempt with a minute left that would have given them win #2 and possibly propelled Missouri State into the poll. Alas, it was a 22-20 loss leading into a showdown at Delaware next weekend.
11) UTEP (1-5) The Minors lost a Wednesday home Bummer Bowl 19-8 to Liberty.Next is another CUSA Wednesday Night Special Bummer Bowl at B25 #3 Sam Houston.
12) Northern Illinois (1-5) The Fusskies lost a Bummer Bowl at MAC compatriots Eastern Michigan, 16-10. Next up is a trip to face the Ohio Bobcats.
13) South Alabama (1-5) The Saguars remain 1-5 after a BYE week before a Bummer Bowl on Tuesday at home against Arkansas State. Following that will be an almost certain Bummer Bowl on Thursday of the following week at Georgia State.
14) Virginia Tech (2-5) The Jokies lost 35-20 at nationally ranked Georgia Tech (The Sports Thinkers favorite team!). Next up is a much needed BYE before hosting California on 10/24.
15) Akron (2-5) The Zips fell 20-7 at home to Miami of Ohio. Ball State plays host for a MAC Bummer Bowl this coming weekend.
16) Eastern Michigan (2-5) The Eagles took their second “Dub” of the season on beating Northern Illinois 16-10 in a home Bummer Bowl. Next up, MAC compatriots Miami (Ohio) visit.
17) UAB (2-4) The Lazyers fall into the poll after a 53-33 loss at Florida Atlantic brought them to 2-4 and that was followed by the firing of Head coach Trent Dilfer. Offensive Coordinator Alex Mortensen will take over as the interim coach. On the season, UAB has an FCS win and also beat fellow 25ers Akron. Next up is a home date with nationally ranked Memphis.
18) Ball State (2-4) The Marginals join the poll after a 42-0 loss at Western Michigan. So far, the 2 wins are over Ohio and also the obligatory FCS win and also include a shutout loss to DHMers Purdue. What better way to celebrate joining the poll than an immediate home Bummer Bowl against B25 #15 Akron.
19) San Jose State (2-4) The Fartans join after a 35-28 loss at Wyoming dropped the record to 2-4, the two wins being over New Mexico and the obligatory FCS win, with a previous loss against fellow 25ers Stanford. Next up is a Friday MWC tilt at Utah State.
20) Georgia Southern (2-4) The Fleagles drop in after a 38-35 home loss to Southern Miss. This GSU beat Jacksonville State and have an FCS win. Like Ball State, they join just in time for a Bummer Bowl, this one also a rivalry game, at home against Georgia State.
21) Louisiana (2-4) The Fadin' Cajuns join the 25 after a 21-14 loss at James Madison. They beat Marshall, and McNeese State of the FCS for their wins. Next up, Southern Miss visits.
22) Stanford (2-4) The Marginal were blown out 34-10 at SMU to join the poll. The two wins are against fellow 25ers Boston College and San Jose State. Next up, Florida State visits on Saturday.
23) Tulsa (2-4) The Golden Bore-icane had a BYE weekend before a Thursday night showdown at East Carolina.
24) West Virginia (2-4) The Fountainbeers were on a BYE week before a trip to sunny Orlando to take on UCF.
25) Arkansas State (2-4) The Ded Wolves had a BYE weekend before a Tuesday night game at fellow 25ers South Alabama.
DISHONORABLE MENTION: Kent State, Colorado State, Liberty, Florida and Arkansas
Dropped Out: UCLA, Colorado, Kansas State
